Today, December 5, we mark International Volunteer Day—a day to honour the unwavering spirit of those who dedicate themselves to serving others without personal gain, even in the most challenging circumstances.
In my frequent visits to areas close to the frontline in Ukraine, I have witnessed and been deeply impressed to observe how much volunteers are a lifeline of hope and resilience in the face of war. They deliver aid, support recovery efforts, and hold communities together when it is needed most.
This year, we are proud to recognize the contributions of over 250 UN Volunteers serving with UN agencies in Ukraine. They play a vital role in crisis response, protecting the most vulnerable, assessing environmental damage, addressing gender-based violence, and engaging in other work like mine action.
Their courage and dedication in these extraordinary times embody the true essence of volunteerism.
On this International Volunteer Day, I extend my deepest gratitude to all volunteers in Ukraine. Your selfless service is a beacon of hope and a testament to the strength of humanity.
Thank you for all that you do.
