Press Release

HORRIFIC ATTACK ON CIVILIANS DURING PENSION DISTRIBUTION IN YAROVA

09 September 2025

HUMANITARIAN COORDINATOR FOR UKRAINE, MATTHIAS SCHMALE, DENOUNCES A HORRIFIC RUSSIAN ATTACK IN THE DONETSK REGION THAT KILLED AND INJURED DOZENS OF CIVILIANS

Terrifying images have reached us of a Russian strike this morning in the village of Yarova, the Donetsk Region, that reportedly killed over 20 people and injured nearly 20 others.

Many of those affected are older people who were collecting their pensions. They are staying in front-line communities despite escalating danger because this is where their homes are.

This lasting violence continues to tear lives apart. In recent days, the Donetsk Region has seen a rise in civilian casualties and damage as hostilities have intensified.

On behalf of the United Nations and the humanitarian community, we stand with all families grieving their loved ones and with all those injured.

Attacks affecting civilians as they go about their daily lives are unconscionable.

Wars have rules. Do not kill or injure civilians. Do not damage homes, schools and other civilian infrastructure.
