Antimicrobial use practices in the livestock sector in Ukraine
19 January 2026
As part of the study, FAO surveyed farmers, veterinarians, staff of veterinary pharmacies, and feed producers. This made it possible to see a realistic picture of how antibiotics are used in practice without assumptions or simplifications. The findings highlight where knowledge gaps and problematic approaches exist, and which practices need to change. Such evidence allows the issue to be addressed in a concrete way and helps identify practical solutions.
The main findings of the report show that:
- antibiotics are not always used based on clear guidelines;
- awareness of the risks of antimicrobial resistance remains uneven;
- disease prevention is often underestimated compared to treatment.
FAO is using these results to promote more responsible approaches in livestock production — in particular by strengthening the role of veterinarians, supporting training, and encouraging better animal husbandry practices.
