Attacks across Ukraine reportedly kill and injure many children on eve of World Children’s Day

Statement by Munir Mammadzade, UNICEF Representative to Ukraine

KYIV, 19 November 2025 – “The latest in a series of deadly attacks across Ukraine has killed three children and injured 19 children in Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Kharkiv, according to latest reports.

“This follows reports of a 17-year-old killed and five more children injured in strikes in Kharkiv region, and another teenager injured in Sumy, earlier this week.

“On the eve of National and World Children’s Day, this is a tragic reminder of the devastating impact of war on young lives. According to the UN, since the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, more than 3,100 children have now been killed or injured in Ukraine.

“These attacks hit civilian areas far from the frontline, a grim reminder that no child, no home, is safe in Ukraine.

“The war has torn through the very fabric of childhood. The rights of millions of children have been violated for far too long. Many families have been devastated by their children being killed. Nearly two million children are still in need of humanitarian assistance, and millions more require sustained support to resume some semblance of childhood.

“These latest attacks come as families struggle to cope with a fourth winter under fire and damage to essential civilian infrastructure, including energy, water and heating networks, is impacting vital services for children.

“We say it again: Children must be protected. Above all, children need an unconditional and lasting peace.”
